WHAT?
A series of short films starring local NC Triangle talent, invoking the spirit of old Hollywood’s screen tests. Intentionally rough and unrehearsed, designed to capture spirit and raw talent.
WHY?
To give actors on camera experience and something to show for it. To give crew people the chance to experiment and have fun out running a camera. To give curious and starting editors a chance to practice.
WHO?
29 performers, 9 camera operators, 2 make-up people, 2 sound engineers, 4 production people, a very flexible director
WHERE?
Raleigh, thus Establishing Shot Raleigh, at space provided by Christ the King.
HOW?
For the ACTORS: We wanted to give as many people a chance to perform as possible so we settled on short improvised scenarios loosely directed by Andrew Martin. We created one set(taking inspiration from Coffee and Cigarettes). Then we treated everything else like a normal day on set. Arriving, doing some paperwork, going through wardrobe and make-up and a lot of waiting around for your turn to act.
CREW people were interested in operating a camera. This seemed like a great idea even for people who work at grips, gaffer, and production assistants so we covered the scene with 4 cameras. One on a dolly, one on a slider, and two static and rotated operators.
Our MAKE-UP, AUDIO, and PRODUCTION people did their normal jobs and did them very well.
WHEN?
May 2015. Putting together 49 scenes is a lot of work. In fact even embracing a DIY spirit, spreading the scenes around, and seeking new interested volunteers we only have part of them finished.
